Located in Kagawa Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, not far from the city of Mitoyo, is where you’ll find Chichibugahama Beach, Japan. It’s a stunning stretch of golden sand, with pools where the ever-changing tide creates dazzling reflections after sundown. The beach, which had previously gone unnoticed, shot to prominence after winning a 2016 tourism organization photo contest. Thousands of people from the surrounding areas went to the shoreline after seeing a photograph of two youngsters reflected in the calm waves.

Chichibugahama beach has become incredibly popular in a short amount of time, becoming a viral phenomenon that has amassed over 180,000 views on social media platforms like Instagram in less than 60 days. The Salar de Uyuni in southwestern Bolivia is the world’s largest salt flat, and its glistening beauty has earned it the name “Beach of Mirrors.” To help tourists better plan their trips and get the best shots, the location’s official website now includes information on the time of day and the tide.

In 1995, a group of concerned citizens banded together to ensure the continued health and beauty of this stretch of coastline for the next generation. Visitors may get a bird’s-eye view of the entire beach from its highest point, and getting there from Mitoyo Station takes only 25 minutes on the “Nio Line” bus. Chichibugahama is an unmissable spot for one-of-a-kind and breathtaking images, and its fame is only going to grow from here on out.
